APWG: Education Landing Page

12.08.2008 - 4:07 PM
One of the most effective ways to avoid becoming a victim of a phishing attack is to be aware of what constitutes a phishing attack. "Seeing is believing" does *NOT* always hold true on the Internet. Understanding this concept can protect Web users from a lot of trouble—as phishing victims would clearly testify.

To that end, we would like to inform our readers of a new program by the APWG/CMU, whose goal is to educate the general public. Here's how the program works: when a phishing site is shut down by officials (e.g. ISP, registrar, Web hosting company), we ask if the official would redirect the URL of the phishing site to an education landing page

Web users who visit the URL (and would have fallen victim to a phishing attempt if the site was live) will see this friendly landing page, will quickly realize that they should not have clicked on the link, and should exercise more caution in future.

Websense is committed to combating this threat and we hope this will help build awareness among the general public. For more details on easy it is to take part in this program, visit APWG's page for more details.
