ToorCon 2008 Recap

09.30.2008 - 8:25 PM
ToorCon finished up its 10th conference in San Diego this past weekend. Both Dan Hubbard and Stephan Chenette gave their presentations on Sunday. We had a good turnout at ToorCon this year, although the late conference announcement may have contributed to a crowd size that was smaller than previous years.

Dan Hubbard - CTO, Websense, Inc.

Dan Hubbard gave a well-received presentation on the malicious potential of cloud computing.

Stephan Chenette, Websense Security Labs

Stephan gave a carefully researched presentation that focused on using browser hooking instead of simulation to deobfuscate Web pages.

One of our favorite talks was given by Alexander Sotirov. This was entitled "How To Impress Girls With Browser Memory Protection Bypasses". Alexander shared research that he and Mark Dowd had completed. He demonstrated that exploitation within browsers is not as secure as most would think, even with the security protection mechanisms available. Their in-depth research, and a copy of their presentation, can be found at the following links: [ Research ] [ Presentation ]

There were some truly excellent presentations at ToorCon this year. We felt that a few of the talks deserved more research time; these served to strengthen our appreciation of the presentations that were really well done.

All in all, we were happy to have spoken at and attended ToorCon 2008, and we hope to see everyone there again next year.
