Black Hat USA 2008

08.06.2008 - 5:25 PM

This week several researchers from the Websense team are in Las Vegas, attending one of the largest gatherings of Internet security professionals: Black Hat USA 2008. We’ll be here through the weekend, checking out dozens of appealing talks that have the potential for interesting developments. Stick around for updates on any news that strikes us as worthy of note!

Today began with one of the most anticipated, and most hyped, talks: Dan Kaminsky’s “It’s the End of the Cache as We Know It”. The talk was intended to outline all of the details surrounding the recently announced DNS vulnerability, which resulted in an industry-wide, coordinated patching effort and garnered significant media coverage.

In a debatably unfortunate turn of events, the details of the vulnerability were guessed and accidentally confirmed a few weeks ago. This took most of the wind out of Dan’s sails, and the talk essentially confirmed what we were all expecting to hear, with a few relatively minor bits of missing information filled in. One thing is clear: if you have not yet secured your DNS infrastructure, you would be incredibly wise to do so now.

There are a few more talks we plan to attend this afternoon, and tomorrow’s lineup looks even better. If any of you are attending the conference, we’ll be at several researcher gatherings during the evenings, where you can feel free to pick our brains.
